Advocacy is an important educational piece of working with service dogs. One has to have the ability to clearly communicate/advocate for the civil legal rights one has with one's service dog. Learning to be firm, confident and able to manage conflict is an important piece of preserving the independence and the civil rights of the disabled population. Therefore, group involvement, getting comfortable with the public access setting with a service dog, interacting with the public (both positive and negative reactions), learning to be effective in teaching, as well as defending constitutional civil rights, are important aspects of advocacy.
